Digging for Bricks

Let's dig for bricks together, you and I—
I'll bring a pair of spades and you bring gloves,
and maybe someone will bring an egg-blue sky
to make us think we'll live forever. Above
the weedy field we'll scrape away the soil
until we feel the scrape of brick on metal,
and then we'll pry them up and in our toil
pretend they're artifacts. Then let us settle
down in rest, a pile of broken brick
unearthed, to sink into the earth ourselves
in midday sabbath, dreaming futures in which
the bricks with which we build will never break.
