MODERN ART

Be avant garde and never be a bore
Use oldthink, and you’re a dinosaur
But wait, could that be a metaphor
The way of ascribing illogical identity
Some artists do have that propensity
For depth of meaning, test its density
If it is merely shallow and superficial
Never signed with just the one initial
Its provenance may even be artificial
Ploughing through all the usual stuff
Classic portraits never seem enough
Why not seek art that may be rough
Something that minds can complete
Modern paintings should be discreet
Understanding can be so bittersweet
The use of shape and colour isn’t all
It’s an effect when hung on the wall
It may trigger joy or even bitter gall
Picking a point where one can start
And enjoy upsetting the applecart
That is the challenge of modern art
