No one cares
if the chicken came
before the egg—
only if the chicken is good
or bad for you—
or where it came from
in which case, they do care
about the chicken
but it’s only a cursory assessment
since the real issue is people
not chickens, not eggs—
the whole chicken-egg thing
was probably rhetorical
oral history, misconstrued
by time and language
the way Latin sayings retain
a sense of gravitas
even as misnomers
