Mergit
I.
O Mergit is a pauky quean
And very douce and clever,
But hay seed in her hair yestreen;
Gied me an unco swither: —
Eh, Mergit lass, hae ye played the dirrydan —
Hae ye been amo' the hay my hen,
Wi' a young man? —
Fy! Mergit lass, I wis' ye hae'na' fa'en
An' lurkit a' yer petty-coatie
At the dirrydan.
II.
I wis' she hae'na fa'en, the lass,
And tasted o' auld Adam!
For if the thing should come to pass,
She 'll be a waefu' madam.
Eh, Mergit lass, etc.
III.
The misbegotten is o' some,
A mark o' gen'rous nature;
But sic a thing may ill become
A pridefu' mim-mou't creature.
