By Myself in a Public Park in the Early Morning

I came across a horseshoe among weeds at a big field's edge,
a real one, with holes for nails and slots for countersinking the nails' heads.
I heaved it underhand a hundred feet
to where there was a wooden croquet stake.

With wet rust red on my humming fingers, I was alone;
there was nobody to witness my magnificent ringer,
snugly at rest against the stake's foot, iron to wood,
just as the sun's lower limb lifted from the horizon
as though seized, gripped, filled, taken, inspired mouth-to-mouth.

Noble Achilles of the world-historical shield:
royal Arjuna, peerless archer of the Eighteen Days:
greatest kshatriya princes of antiquity: be with me.
Nothing like that will ever happen to me again
at daybreak or any other hour of the day or night.
