A Poem on Buddha's Begging Bowl — For Hui-ku, His Holiness Ming

The sage and the ordinary man both have bodies
and must use utensils to eat and drink.
When the Buddha had his stone bowl made
it wasn't only to pass on the Teaching!
But it did become a symbol of the light he left
and a tradition developed of handing it down.
And so, later generations of his followers
would fight and squabble over this bowl!
I think that such people go too far:
they should understand the meaning of " raising the flower. "
