The Prayers

If we listen, we can hear
Through all sounds that earth is making,
Through its music, sweet and clear,
Through its moan when hearts are breaking,
A low murmur, as of streams,
Flowing through a land of dreams.

'Tis the ceaseless sound of prayer,
Men and women, sobbing, pleading,
With more pain than they can bear,
For God's pity interceding.
All together, each alone,
Beat the prayers against the throne.

If we listen, we can hear
Through all sounds that earth is making,
Through its music, sweet and clear,
Through its moan when hearts are breaking,
A low murmur, as of streams,
Flowing through a land of dreams.

'Tis the ceaseless sound of prayer,
Men and women, sobbing, pleading,
With more pain than they can bear,
For God's pity interceding.
All together, each alone,
Beat the prayers against the throne.
