The Shepherdess and the Sailor

It's of a little shepherdess who was keeping of her sheep
On the rocks that are near the seaside,
The weather being warm so she lay down to sleep
And by chance a young sailor came that way.

He kissed her sweet lips as she lay fast asleep,
Saying, " O dear, you stole my heart away."
Then she waked in surprise and she opened her eyes
And she saw the young sailor standing by.

" Young sailor," then said she, " how came you here by me?"
And with that she begins for to cry.
" I'm just come on shore from the ship that you see,
On these rocks I am landed alone.
So I hope, my dearest dear, I shall find some comfort here.
Or else I'm for ever undone."

" Young sailor," then said she, " how can you fancy me?
I never can give consent.
For when you're on the seas I could never be at case
But you leave me to sigh and lament."

" Young shepherdess," said he, " if you can fancy me,
I have plenty of money in store,
And the sea I will forsake and promise to you I'll make,
I'll be true unto you evermore."

Then she gave him her consent and to church they quickly went
And were married the very same day.
With joy, love and peace each to their hearts they did increase,
The young sailor his shepherdess adored.

Come all you jolly shepherdesses who are keeping of your sheep
On the rocks that are near the seaside,
Take a sailor for your life and he'll make you his wife
And the sailor your fortune he will make.
