Song Made by Sir Dinadan for Sir Tristram that an Harper Might Play It Before King Mark

Incipit citharista

Two trees grew in a garden close.
Cock a doodle doo! And who goes there?
These young leaves were fresher than those
For those were withered and warped with care;
As the sap runs in the root of the wood
A tree doth wax in his lustihood
Till buds be thickened and leaves protrude;
And sappy Spring is happy.

There was a nest in the elder tree.
Cock a doodle doo! And who goes there?
A song bird's home in the leaves to be;
But these were withered and warped with care.
A cuckoo sat in the leaves and trolled:
Cuckoo. Cuckoo. Look who look old.
Cuckoo, Cuckoo, Cuckoo, Cuckold!
And sappy Spring is happy.

Hic calcibus citharistam ejiciunt .
