The Song of the Pearl-Fishers

Waves of the sea, fathomless, pearls submerged in the sea
The pearl-divers pit their lives against death to collect them.
Ten thousand risks to the snatching of one pearl
Rich men buy concubines by the pearl-load,
Where are the divers?
As year goes by and year comes in, the pearls avoid them.
For the Sea Spirit himself has lately taken up collecting
And when he collects, the pearls die out.
With the bright pearls dead, the sea is empty water.
For the pearls are the sea's, and the sea is the Spirit's.
If the Spirit collects, what chance do mortals have?
