Sonnet, to Henry James Pye, Esq
Lo! from the sacred hill's sublimest steep,
The tuneful Sisters hail thy toil complete,
Enthron'd beyond the flagging whirlwind's sweep,
Where thine own Homer holds his cloudless seat;
Like H IM , the glories of thy native land,
A Patriot-bard! thou giv'st to deathless fame,
And, nobly, bid'st each B RITISH heart expand
With recollection fond of A LFRED'S name.
Well do'st thou dare the high, heroic rhyme,
Divinely tutor'd by S TAGYRA'S Sage ,
Who, first, convey'd to our remoter clime,
Each loftier charm of his perspicuous page;
And, (while the Graces strew thy laurel'd way,)
