Spare Me

Spare me the crash
Of cymbals, and the roll of drums that mutter
Unutterable things,
The terror of the trumpets, and the lash
Of lacerating strings —
Of violins that wail like souls in anguish:
And let me not, O life,
Hear, as I go into the night, the shrilling
Of the heart-breaking fife!
