Stranger! who near this statue hap to stray

Stranger! who near this statue hap to stray
Regard it well, I pray, with sedulous care,
So that returning home from Teos you may
Exclaim, “I saw Anacreon's statue there.”
Then if you say, “He was the flower and choice
Of all the stars of song of pristine days,
And in the young and fair he did rejoice,”
You will describe him, and most justly praise.
