Sundered

O the aching pain of that long, long night
When we walked as friends, who are friends no more,
Side by side in the waning light,
By the ghostly cliffs, on the lonely shore!
O the aching pain of that long, long night—
And the void now the night is o'er!

I had marked a change, but it seemed so slight
I had thought, I had hoped I was wrong before,
Till a word and a look, like a flash of light,
Showed the friend I had loved was a friend no more!
O the aching pain of that long, long night—
And the void now the night is o'er!

If he came back now could it all come right?
Could I trust him again as I did before?
It is hard to tell. Who knows? I might—
But ah! I am sure he will come no more!
And the aching pain of that long, long night
Will last till my life is o'er!
