Classic Poem

When Sylvia was youthful,
And all in her prime,
Then Guineas were plenty,
How joyful the Time!

No Friends then were wanting,
To spend the long Day;
When to her restor'd
The grave and the gay.

But Money takes Wings,
And her's soon flew away;
And Sylvia in Sickness
Upon the Floor lay.

Her Guineas are gone,
And her Friends are all fled;
So Sylvia may lay on
The Floor 'till she's dead.

All hurry'd in Business,
Excuses can make;
And surely self Love
Much Time up will take.

But Abigail now
To her aid did appear,
Who newly had met
With the same kind of fare.

God bless'd her endeavours,
And Sylvia got well;
And then she of Abigail's
Kindness did tell.

Observe this, ye Christians,
The Saviour does say,
To visit the Sick,
When in Prison they lay.

Christ says it's as kind
As if done unto he;
If you visit no Sick, then
To blame you must be.

All ye that have Gold,
And are blooming in Youth;
Know, the Story I've told you
Of Sylvia's a Truth.

Then seek for those Riches
That durable be;
They'll not fly away,
Like the Gold that you see.
