Translation from Pindar's Seventh Olympian, Epode III

And to these Rhodians She, the Sharp-eyed One,
Gave the supremacy to rule in Art,
And, nobly-labouring, play the craftsman's part,
Beyond all dwellers underneath the sun.
So that the very ways by which ye pass
Bore sculpture-living things that walk or creep,
Like as the life: whence very high, and deep
Indeed, the glory of the Artist was.
For, in the well-instructed Artist, skill—
However great—receives our greeting
As something greater still
When unaccompanied by—cheating!
