To the Tune "Stopping My Horse to Listen"

I raise my winecup to the flowers
and mistake an oriole for a cuckoo's song.
Far in the sky — returning geese;
in setting sunlight — returning heart!
Down distant waters — returning boat.
Fifth night watch, a dream of returning
through the mountain clouds —
one cry from the neighbor's rooster
calls me back, awake.
Somewhere in this sad neighborhood — cold strings,
strings that always play the song,
Longing to Return.
