The Wanton Seed

As I walked forth one morning fair,
To view the fields and take the air,
I espied a pretty maid making this complaint,
That she stood in need of the chiefest grain.

I stepped up to this fair maid
And unto her these words I said,
I said, ‘My pretty fair maid, do you stand in need,
I've a grain that is called the wanton seed.’

‘Oh yes, kind sir, I do stand in need
Of a grain that is called the wanton seed,
And if you are the man that can well do the deed,
Come and sow my meadow with your wanton seed.’

Then she sowed high and I sowed low,
And under her apron the seed did grow;
It sprung up so neatly without any weed,
And she always commended me well for my seed.
