What Her Girl Friend Said to the Foster-Mother

If you think, mother,
she's tormented by that goddess
of sweet-water places,

why then

is she growing so thin
that her ornaments come loose,
her soft arms grow sallow?

It's all for that man
from the riverside
where the crabs' feet
make designs
on the cool wet sands.
