Why, why, what is this why
But virtus verbi Domini?

When nothing was but God alone,
The Fader, the Holy Gost, with the Sone,
One was three, and three was one.
What is this why?
To frayn why I hold but foly;
It is non other certenly
But virtus verbi Domini .

Fiat was a word ful bold,
That made al thing as He wold —
Heven and erth and men of mold.

The world gan wax and multiply;
The planetes made hem full bisy
To rewll eche thing by and by.

The planetes work nothing in vein,
But, as they be ordeind, so must they reign;
For the word of God wil not agein.
