When Yü-k'o painted bamboo

When Yü-k'o painted bamboo,
He saw bamboo only, never people.
Did I say he saw no people?
So rapt he forgot even himself—
He himself became bamboo,
Putting out fresh growth endlessly.
Chuang Tzu no longer with us,
Who can fathom this uncanny power?
