Wit's Pilgrimage - Part 87
It's saide and knowne, (and, so, it's held for true,)
That Arethusa , and Alpheus are
Two Riuers that, each other so persue
As noughte can let their Course, or water marre:
For sweete Alpheus doth through Thetis glide,
Free from her saltnesse, (though, Lais like shee steere)
Vntill he meete vpon the other side,
With his loue Arethusa fresh and cleere
Then, if that sencelesse Riuers (which by kinde
Are most vnstaid) in loue so constant bee,
Let me not you (Faire Nimphe ) vnconstant finde,
Sith through all wrongs, I runne, arighte, to Thee:
Then, sith to thee I runne through Sorrowes Seas,
Let mee in thy cleare Hart, and Armes haue ease.
