Birds cannot walk, beasts cannot fly
Not understanding each other's understanding, they feel no mutual scorn
Dogs do not drink dew, cicadas do not gnaw flesh
Change the cicada with the dog, the cicada'll die, the dog'll starve.
The swallow sits on the beam, the mouse hides below-stairs
To each his bolt-hole, don't try changing places
Women like needlework, men read the classics
The boy's the ancient, the girl's the wife — each one's knowledge is a separation.
Fearing your deafness I cup my ear,
Copying your pain I wrinkle my forehead
I am not unless you are, you are without if I am unless.
