Training: Weights

Tsung, used to masking
his reactions so opponents
did not anticipate his moves,
showed none of his disappointment
as he assessed the boy
who would be both his charge
and his student:
sixteen years old,
close to full height,
but the boy could not even lift
the medium-weight bar.

Clear then to Tsung that the boy
was not his father's equal,
was not his brothers' equal.
Un-muscled, overlooked
fourth son.
Now king.

Troutmas

Troutmas

Spring pours across a Saturday morning creek, wind-lined

in this dandelion time of year. The tribes are restored: tents

pop up like international flags, countries and clans joined

by colors, by flames of bonfire and sunrise laughter,

pan-seared. This is the first day of Trout, hooks and lines

A Drunken Rant

Oh, you say you love me; is it true?
The sky, it appears, is blue; is it blue?
I lived a long life without a damn clue,
If I ever find God anywhere, I’ll sue.
Methinks, it’s the devil I better pursue
Set aside holy water and beer I’ll brew
Go and pick a pack of disgruntled crew
To steal the Dog Star its brilliant hue
And garner the dawn’s glistening dew
Up from the sky get a bird’s-eye view
Live better if all the knowledge I knew
And obtain from the Mystic a divine cue,

Trumped

In Wisconsin I was trumped I turned to Ohio and Iowa And there again got trumped Finding no joy in Pennsylvania I fled to Florida in search of solace But was no better off than before Everywhere I went I was trumped Now here I am humble before him For, I fear, wherever I go in the US They will be singing Donald Trump!

Spacer's Compass

South I shipped…galactic south
spanning the reaches of unbounded space
through the moss stars and beyond
hanging with this crew or that
            a rough lot they were
            or some just strange
stranger than you’d care to know
for a light year or two on the fly

West I wandered…galactic west
