Stepmother

Princess,
what are you doing?
Riding beside the new queen,
applauding the arrows
that fly from her bow?
Remember the rules:
mistrust her.
Oh, she's a huntress, all right,
captured your father's heart,
or rather his groin.
A man's prick,
even a king's prick,
hasty not wise.

Woman,
what are you doing?
Wasting your time on a girl
who threatens your grip
on the throne?
Remember the rules:

Untitled Dying Love

Devil's got your soul if so quickly your love for me can spin out of all control
All I ever believed about you was true died with your lies told to me tonight
Virgin innocent swallowed whole by the hungry wolf come to feed
I never knew love could be so cruel or hurt so much
Down for the count from the heartbreaking lesson you've taught

So much hope I had for a future that now I'm no longer sure of
Cold and selfish you hide within yourself
One never quite able to touch or melt the ice monster you hide inside your heart

angelic

peace arrives on
alighting swan
as cygnus glides
onto glass chiffon
ripples remind me
within my sleepy eyes
that vanity ends
upon bluer skies
ascend white cloud
into awaiting night
and return to He
who composed your flight

Origami Rockets

They float to the moon
in origami rockets.
Astronauts from

a childhood fantasy.
The moon smells
like a green apple.

They walk freely
on its skin without
helmets or spacesuits.

They build a town.
Stores and houses.
Schools and libraries.

A street fair with
lots of free parking.
And the moon people

come to live there.
Up from their craters
and their moon caves.

A gentle sleepy race.
Just the right sort
to carry our dreams.

This wasn’t the place I thought I’d be, and even getting here was hard.
        —Jennifer Jones, “Jordan County Park”

I thought it was a funny place for
a job interview; the floor was half-an-inch
deep in water, or something like it,
with galvanized garbage can lids
for stepping-stones. There were twitching,
sudden movements in the fluid; maybe fish,
but I didn’t want to stare. It was important
to seem completely at ease.

He was floating directly above an enormous
