194th Weekly Poetry Contest honorable mention: MAMA AFRIQUE'S RITUAL

It’s time again,
When the harmattan,
dances to the luring tune of weather's beat

When *amadioha’s roars,
ushers in the disappearance of weeping skies

When our laundries,
learn the fast track of dryness

When the blazing sun,
smokes out hostile fats with perspiring urgency

When the farmer’s hoe traces its previous pathway, to explore healthy tubers in the womb of mother earth

This season brings its goodies, to Mama Africa in bulk

I can hear the pine whistling.

I sit at my keyboard,
and I think of you...
A smile curves my lips
at the memory of your laugh.

I know I should be
cleaning house,
or washing clothes,
or making dinner...

But instead I dream
of touching you,
of seeing your face,
or hearing your voice

Forever by your side
is where I wish to stay
a lifetime together
bound by more than law.

I return to the roots,
The branches, the leaves,

To the only place
I ever found peace.

In this palace of winds
I am one with the trees,

The crows and the ravens
Bring solace to me.

No devastation from men
With their sticks and knives,

No destruction from those
Labelling me with a price.

Here I am now
With the sticks and stones,

Here I will reduce
Them all into bones.

They will arrive
With their guns and scythes,

Here we will wait
And eat them alive.

As dark and distant spheres resound like whale song in our ears
and cosmic microwaves caress our spirit,
we pioneer, alone, across infinities of tone,
amazed that we’re the only ones who hear it.

While we glide amid the planets plump as plums and pomegranates,
sailing with the interstellar current,
the sounds we make are quiet or they’re louder than a riot,
but for grooving, neither’s ever a deterrent.
