An exhale leaves her charred lips
As he kisses her one last time
No romance passes between them
They both know this is a goodbye

She raises her hands,
Stopping short halfway to his hair
And snaps her fingers

Just as quickly as he'd kissed her
He pulls back
There is no fear in his gaze
When the sky starts raining black

"Ashes, ashes, we all fall down"
The children's chant fills the air
And she laughs
A crazed bitter sound

Around them the wilderness burns
Lighting up the midnight sky
They lock eyes
"I'm sorry it had to come to this," She means it.
"You can't outrun death. You can't outrun me" The flames are growing nearer
"I don't need to, you cannot take me if I take myself"

Then she screams
And she burns

He watches as flames overtake her
Even as they leave no trace on him
And he understands
She cannot lay waste to Death
Or stop his bitter games
But, he cannot take her soul
If she takes it herself
