Taking a breath at the shore of the lake,
Carrot reflects on the crystalline sky,
Deep as the atmosphere, still and opaque,
Quietly shimmering, frozen, a lie.
Ev'rything flows, she admits with a sigh:
Syrup and butterflies, hurricanes, cake.
Permanence vanishes. What can she try,
Taking a breath at the shore of the lake?
Whiskers like needles, she winces, the ache
Soft as his voice when he told her goodbye.
Lost in the past with its give and its take,
Carrot reflects on the crystalline sky.
Slowly, her cheek fur is dampening. "Why?"
Carrot demands of the clouds. "Was it fake?"
Guilt rolls a thunder too thick to deny,
Deep as the atmosphere, still and opaque.
Cold disillusionment sets her to shake.
"Focus!" she hisses, refusing to cry,
Glares at the water and wants it to break,
Quietly shimmering, frozen, a lie.
Shatter the calm! It's diseased and should die!
Scatter that image! It's him was the flake!
Splashing her paws to destroy, to defy,
Muddy, she squeaks, coming fully awake,
Taking a breath.
