Cause Jesus loved little children
we built homes for the lost ones,
gave them beds with white pillows
and white-beyond-whiter sheets,
fed them at wooden tables
in the long wooden refectory
where sunlight through the
high frosted windows ignited
the dust motes in the air
with Heavenly Light.

Cause Jesus loved little children
we fed them porridge and bread,
slices of beef well-boiled in
stews of cabbage and carrot,
-- nothing too spicy or raw
for such virgin digestions --
examined each of them daily,
felt their bodies and bones
for signs of Satanic infection,
fed them the ways of the Lord
and the laws of Our Savior.

Cause Jesus loved little children
we took them into the sanctuary
of our hallowed walls and beds,
and the ones we could not cure,
the unruly ones, the disobedient,
the troublemakers, the ones who
failed to survive our catechism,
we covered in white sheets and
laid to rest in ever sacred ground
to ensure their eternal salvation.
