Ray of sun ever so slight
Penetrating the hold of darkness
Loosening its tightened grip, ever so slight
Providing the most minute relief during hardship
I feel its gentle warmth raise the temperature on my skin
My brain alerts me to its presence
To one who’s survived trek’s through the depths of hell,
How refreshing then is even a miniscule piece of heaven?
A reminder of what it feels like, beyond my shell
Appreciation for this life despite its impediments
A simple reminder as I trudge through the ravines
Of the possibility that someday it will all be worth it
The battles end, the spoils of war, the rainbow following the squall
A weary heart, a weakened back, a man being forced to crawl
The smallest reason to keep going, the audacity to stand tall
Disregard for the improbability of surviving, beating insurmountable odds,
A drop of water from the clouds during time of prolonged drought
I cling to you like a raft in a river, flowing to where I do not know.
If that river sends me adrift and drowns me,
At least I drowned then having hope.
