She gets up from where she was lying,
stretches leisurely,
and walks slowly to the window.
She scans the back yard at length,
looking for any movement,
anything to delight her
like squirrels, deer, chipmunks, turkeys,
even the odd bear.
But there is only snow and ice, unmoving, frozen,
devoid of color.
After long, patient attention
she makes her way back to the place in front of the wood stove
and lies down again,
closes her eyes,
and dreams of summer,
when a Schnauzer can run, chase animals,
and have many things at which to bark.
