The Only Other Known Certainty

remark that the two ripe mangoes
placed on a low table
the bounty of fertility herself
idol borrowed from life-giving gesture

hover above each shoulder
evil spirits, a dialogue between death
the glyphs never deciphered
an intention to impenetrability

remark on the expression
he gives her in close
taken together, the arms
a hollow mask carries a rough figure

suggest a reference to paradise
that questioned her fidelity
his fantasies on the temptress
the jealousy
