We started off in a room together,
But a storm swept through.
I left and walked through the door,
Leaving the door open behind me.
I hoped she’d go through,
And she did.

But she went out the back door.
She went the wrong way.
Then she was out the back,
I was out the front,
And there was a massive gap in the middle.
A gap that was never filled.

The wind closed the doors
And over time the hinges rusted.
Now they can’t be opened.
The only way to meet is to go around,
But that’s a long journey when you don’t know what you’ll find on the other side.

It’s been so long,
The other side wasn’t the same as it was when the doors were open.
So we play it safe.
Stay on our side for fear of what you might find if you venture into the unknown,
And you dream of what it looks like on the other side.

But you’ll never know.
Even though you desperately want to.
So you wander aimlessly,
Thoughts running wild and free.

You considering chasing them,
Chasing them to the other side.
But anytime you get close, you stop,
You stay still for a moment,
Before sighing and stepping back,
Then turning around and returning to your side.

This goes on and on,
And on and on and on.
So you stay on your side,
Never going around.

Yet what you don’t know,
Is that they’re doing the exact same,
And all it would take,
Is one person to step across the middle,
And enter the unknown.
