There is something ridiculous about skin
And how soft yours feels
In the silver light of the television screen.
You peel an orange
In the bluish darkness of the kitchen,
Legs trembling
From the metaphorical weight of it all.

Outside the window,
A dog howls -
And he is you and you are him.
It is past midnight,
And when your own reflection in the window makes you jump,
The refrigerator light does not protect you
But you forgive it
with a bashful laugh.

Up the stairs,
Around the bed.

The ceiling needs to be fixed,
The leaky faucet in the bathroom:
Drip drip drip.
The night lies ahead,
Stripped naked under silver light,
And the bed crumbles under
The metaphorical weight of it all.
Drip drip drip.
Always, there is another orange to peel.
