I love you, deepest darling of the earth.
Your eyes are wide and starry,
my lips can feel your pulse.
Nothing but the lines of your smile
can restore the prints to my fingertips.
You rest against my chest,
your head fitting,
stooped,
along my cheek.
Is this what we were meant to be?
Perhaps you’ll lose your subtlety
and perhaps I’ll trip and fall,
but always,
always,
will we be the same differences,
the same closeness to the wall
that can’t be hit.
I can’t try to knock it down.
We’ll maintain the resistance
to a time we never knew,
but while you’re sinking into me,
I’ll still be drifting into you.
Strangers don’t ask
what it means to be with me,
and the others won’t say a thing
about the strength they just can’t see,
the love of eyes that’s so specific,
so certain
to be an ending now that it’s begun.
Grace comes quickly
when you’re opened to it,
but I don’t think we need it,
I don’t see the point yet.
All that’s sure,
and all that’s sad,
can be overlooked,
we don’t need it too badly.
I’ll gladly pass the torch to another person
I haven’t met,
but you’ll be here tomorrow,
and that’s all I need to know.
You’ll be here the next day,
and that’s proof that we’re growing,
that we’ve grown.
Grown in directions that aren’t yet discovered,
because we’re growing into each other, darling,
and holding on to a shivering day.
At some point, we’ll be alone
and we’ll be returned.
But until then, we have some chances,
and you’re all I want.
