You prowl and you pursue
The new, the lonely, the meek or subdued
Initially you’re charming and sweet
You’ve got your game set and are prepared to not be beat

You’ve got your agenda, your purpose driving your chase
Victory you will surely taste.
And the words you utter at the start
May not be the true actions led by your dark heart.

You weave your tale
You flatter and enspell
Your eye on the goal
You whisper sweet nothings that awaken her naive soul

Deception and half truths are in your skill set
Incapable of empathy, an emotion you haven’t learned yet.

You play the cards close to your chest
Slight of hand to distract and to test
Boundaries she has set
You do not respect

But you are like smoke and fire
That starts out strong
But slowly or unexpectedly expires
Just as quickly as you appear
You ghost leaving only a trail of tears.

A player that has perfected his game
You leave your victims to be never the same.
But after the tears a lesson is found
To not play the game the next time around.

And perhaps one day
Unfortunately to you, I may say
A woman who is a better player than you
Will beat you at your game and you’ll get your due.
And realize those who you took advantage
We mere lovable mortals in your game so savage.

A change of heart you may realize
Once you lose, your own behavior you despise.
Or maybe when a loved one meets their own player,
Maybe you’ll realize the message of this truth sayer.

A game of love that only benefits one
Will leave you in the end to your own loneliness and shunned.
Because others witness your game
And soon you will not have any more victims to claim.

So player heed my advice
Change your game or roll the dice.
But continue as you do now
Will leave you lonely and shallow.
A lack of true depth only succeeds for a short time
And with that warning I end my rhyme.
