Anecdote of Henry the Fourth of France

A Victor — in the lap of Ease,
The Fair alone his mind could please;
In Beauty's arms the time he wore,
The Patriot — Hero — was no more.

But native honour touch'd his heart,
And made him from the Tempter part;
Restor'd him to himself again,
The loss repair'd, and broke the chain.

To an arm'd Host he thus appeal'd:
" Another King shall to the field;
Of thine , gay France , no more be heard,
" Navarre " shall be the conquering word. "
