Luis de Leon

If it be bread we see, how doth it last
When eating it, it cometh to an end?
If God, how do we know it bread by taste?
Why doth it the mere look of bread pretend?

If bread, why doth the adoring creature bend?
If God, why doth it hold so small a space?
If bread, how is the contradiction kenned?
If God, made Maker eats without disgrace?

If bread, how can so small a thing solace?
If God, how is it sundered, bit from bit?
If bread, how can it yield the soul such grace?
If God, how do I see and handle it?

If bread, how came it down from heaven's height?
If it be God, why die I not of fright?
